Electric Vehicles [EV’s]are becoming more commonplace in Ireland and across Europe, so you might be considering the switch but perhaps you have some questions about Electric cars.
It may be daunting to consider the switch to electric but is it the future?
The short answer is YES, for now at least. Electric cars have been around for a few years at this stage and advances in technology have made Electric cars a reliable and now cost-effective means of motoring.
Yes, electric cars as all other cars need regular servicing. However, a lot of people are of the opinion they need to go to the main dealer for repairs or servicing.
This is NOT true .. Contrary to popular belief the electric vehicle motor is a relatively basic component with very few moving parts when compared to a petrol or diesel engine and many of the serviceable components of your vehicle have not changed. So once you deal with a professional mechanics who stay up to date with their training, electric car servicing can be carried out by a reputable local garage.
Surely it has a shelf life ! This is one of the most frequently asked questions about EV’s “how long does the battery last in an electric car?’
As we all know from our own personal electronics, batteries degrade over time with prolonged use. Thankfully manufacturers have noted this concern and have extended warranties on many batteries which can vary anything from 3-10 years with varying mileages.
The AC in Electric Cars can be slightly different to the AC in vehicles with internal combustion engines.
The AC pump is electric and is powered by the battery rather than by an engine. It forms part of the high voltage system in an electric vehicle, so any repairs need to be carried out by a trained technician. Read more about Car Air Conditioning Re-gas services HERE.
Will service and repair costs of my EV be expensive? Generally speaking no. Many of the items you would be familiar with and regard as expensive repairs are non-existent in electric cars!
Items including oil changes, alternator belts, spark plugs, diesel filters, timing belts, head gaskets, DPF filters, catalytic converters amongst many other expensive sounding repairs are a thing of the past with electric cars.
While you will still have suspension, brake and tyre costs but these will be no more expensive than they ever were.
